I’m reading Jane of Lantern Hill by LM Montgomery for this category. I listened to the audio book a few years ago, but am enjoying reading it in print.
Thank you for sharing about the Growing Summer. It sounds like one I will love. I just ordered the UK version online and will be excited to jump in when it arrives.

I'm slowly reading aloud The Growing Summer. We've been inconsistent in our read alouds over summer. I've never read the Enright books, but I got the Melendy Quartet at a library book sale today 🙌

In reply to <a href="https://annarosejohnson.com/the-growing-summer-summer-of-vintage-kidlit-week-6/#comment-190500">Marion</a>.

Thank you for sharing that. I read that as a girl but don’t have clear memories of it at all. While I trust your analysis, I am surprised (and disappointed) as it doesn’t seem consistent with LMA’s treatment of the poor in Little Women or Old-Fashioned Girl. I think I should add this to my reread list!

I chose "A Garland For Girls" by Louisa May Alcott Reading this book was very disappointing. The group of girls sit around in the field and discuss matters. The shocking words of the girls with their attitude of poor people and non members of society. The only conclusion is the author is prejudice towards others who were not in her class.

I chose "The Valentine Box" by Maud hart Lovelace. Janice has just moved to Oak Grove from the city. Janice walking home from school during a snow storm and hopes her mother will let her stay home this afternoon. It is Valentine's day and Janice is afraid she will not receive any Valentine cards from her classmates. Going back to school after lunch, she meets her classmate Margaret. Margaret's Valentine winds up in the air due to the wind. Janice helps Margaret find the Valentine. When the Valentines are distributed, Janice receives a special one from Margaret. They become fast friends. Janice also receives a Valentine from Mary Lou her best friend from the city. This is a cute book.

Thanks for flagging the dedication to Elizabeth Enright - I had missed that when I read "The Growing Summer." I love the Melendy series.

I have just read several of the Penny Parker mysteries by Mildred Wirt, who wrote a great many of the original Nancy Drew books under the pseudonym Caroline Keene. The books are absolutely delightful. Like Nancy, Penny is the highly independent daughter of a widowed father, equipped with her own automobile and plenty of spunk. Penny is a less perfect and bouncier character than Nancy, however, and the books have some humor as well as well-developed mysteries. I wish I had discovered these as a kid, but better late than never!
